Playing for Success with Saints RLFC

St.Helens RLFC were one of the last clubs to join this most successful Playing for Success initiative in 2008. The Centre was officially launched by local MP Dave Watts on the 26 June 2009 although has been open to schools in the borough from October 2008 for a five week pilot scheme and to the full cohort of schools from January 2009.  The Centre is equipped with 20 highly specified Dell laptops and 17 stylish AppleMac computers, which altogether offers a different multimedia experience to that they may receive in schools. Despite the proposed move to the new stadium which has obviously had its’ restrictions on the development of the Centre we certainly boast the ‘best room’ in the Club and will continue to resource the facility setting the standard in preparation for the move in 2011.

An Introduction to Playing for Success

Playing for Success
(PfS) is a partnership between the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), local authorities and a broad range of sports. Partners include clubs and the Premier League and Football Leagues, Rugby League and Union, cricket, basketball, hockey, ice hockey, gymnastics and tennis. In all, 18 different sports are represented in PfS.
St Helens PfS centre, at the GPW Recruitment Stadium, is just one of these many clubs. The centre will introduce young people to the exciting world of Rugby League with St Helens RLFC offering an informal and stimulating environment that will highlight the role of sport and emphasise active learning through the curriculum. The centre will focus on getting pupils up to speed in the key skills of  literacy, numeracy and ICT, enhance a range of learning styles, and improve self esteem, confidence and motivation levels.

Origins

The Playing for Success initiative has its origins in the government's 1997 manifesto commitment 'To attack underachievement in urban areas'. A link was forged with the Premier League and, in partnerships between central government, local government and football clubs, the concept of Study Support Centres evolved into a working reality. Twelve years on from the inception and PfS is recognized as an established body through which the environment and medium of sport is used to motivate and support pupils outside the classroom.

The priorities of the Centre are to support the outcomes for Every Child Matters, offering access to all to a range of high quality learning experiences which will be suited to needs and aspirations, raise standards of attainment, enrich lives and engage pupils in active learning.

"The work of Playing for Success centres, supporting children’s’ education in a tailored way, closely corresponds with our own vision of the future of learning – personalised around the needs of each and every child. In addition, centres are increasingly forming part of the Extended Schools services offered by local authorities, and Playing for Success continues to contribute to each of the five outcomes for young people identified in Every Child Matters."
Rt Hon Ed Balls MP
Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families
