Playing for Success with Saints RLFC

Picture
St.Helens RLFC was one of the last clubs to join this most successful initiative and have just completed their first year in operation. The Centre was officially launched by local MP Dave Watts on the 26 June 2009, although has been open to schools in the borough from October 2008. The Centre is housed within the former players lounge in the GPW Recruitment Stadium and has been decorated, refurbished and enhanced to provide a stimulating and exciting learning environment. Here at Saints PfS we boast the latest in technology and equipment that will help facilitate the learning process. At the centre it's not just another school day. Our classroom is an environment in which minds will be stimulated and creativity let loose in a Professional sporting environment.

Urban Sports Programme

Picture
Before Christmas, Playing for Success trialed a new 'Urban Sports' initiative at Haydock Sports College. With the success of the pilot, and pupils wanting more, Playing for Success are now pushing the young skaters with the introduction of ramps into the scheme. Delivering the initiative is Playing for Success' own John Prescott who said "I was amazed at how enthusiastic the pupils are and how quickly they are progressing. They are certainly not afraid to try something new".

Urban sports are a great tool for aiding the holistic growth of both children and adults alike. They help to develop coordination, balance and general fitness in a fun and unconventional setting, whilst also acting as a great vehicle for social development building on confidence, self esteem and self motivation. Hopefully the success of the initiative will continue.

SHE Dance Project

The SHE programme is a council initiative for targeted girls who would not usually participate in traditional out of hours physical activity. The
programme for 72 girls from Rainhill, St Cuthberts and Sutton High Sports College is run in partnership with Saints PfS Centre. The programme begins in school by offering the girls non traditional activities such as boxercise, street dance and cheerleading. the girls were then invited to attend a half term cheerleading camp so that they could prepare for a performance prior to the Saints V Crusaders match on 12th March.

After the successful presentation on the pitch at Saints, all the girls
will be taken to Boreatton Park PGL centre to attend a weekend of outdoor and adventurous activities. Rob Vaughan, Partnership Development Manager for the School Sport Partnerships said

"The SHE programme has developed over the last seven years to incorporate a variety of partners and activities, however they have always been held after school. This is the first time the girls have been asked to attend during their own school holidays and we were very pleased with the positive response from the participants."
